Choosing a Bed
The bed is the centerpiece of a bedroom, providing a comfortable surface for sleep and relaxation. It’s important that the bed be sturdy and well-made, but also stylish and welcoming. A bed can take many forms, from a simple frame to a canopy structure. Beds come in various sizes, including single, double and king size. A bed is normally topped with a mattress and covered with a bed sheet.
The first thing to consider when choosing a new bed is the type of sleeper it’s intended for. This will help determine what kind of construction or materials are best suited to the task. There are three basic mattress types—innerspring, foam, and adjustable air—and each delivers a different sleeping experience.
Innerspring mattresses consist of a steel-coil foundation padded with layers of fiber padding or foam to provide a soft, cradling feel. They are resilient and more likely to conform to a sleeper’s body, but they may also be less flexible and tend to retain more heat than foam mattresses.
Foam mattresses consist of several layers of memory foam or other types of foam to give a firm, supportive feel. They are more flexible than innerspring mattresses, but they can be more susceptible to sinkage and movement, and they may not offer enough support for heavier sleepers. Foam mattresses typically feel cooler than innerspring beds and offer more pressure relief for people with back or neck problems.
Mattresses can also be made of a variety of materials, from traditional cotton to organic cotton and wool. The latter two are considered environmentally friendly because they’re grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, which can be harmful to the environment. Other materials include bamboo, jute and hemp, which are all natural, sustainable, and biodegradable.
Another consideration when selecting a bed is its price and warranty. Typically, a higher-end bed will cost more but come with a longer warranty and better construction. A good warranty should cover at least 10 years, and the bed should be able to withstand normal use. It’s also important to look at the company that makes a mattress to see if they have a history of lawsuits or product recalls, and to ensure the bed meets United States federal flammability standards.
In ancient Rome, a bed served as a multipurpose reclining surface where friends and family would sit or recline to socialize, study, and eat. In modern times, it’s still a popular place for families to gather and relax.
