Buying a Bed

A bed is a piece of furniture that provides comfort and support while you sleep. It is generally positioned in the center of the room and may be used for sleeping, socializing, dining or studying. Historically, beds have been made from wood, metal or some combination of materials. There are many different types of beds that can be purchased today, each with its own unique style and features.

There are a variety of factors that go into choosing the right mattress for you, including: temperature regulation, motion isolation, overall “feel” and durability. The most important factor is your personal preference. Some people like the feel of a soft mattress, while others prefer the firmer feel of a more rigid mattress.

Some mattresses have extra features, such as memory foam, latex or innerspring coils. These additional features can offer added benefits, such as increased support or cooling. Other features, such as zoned support, are designed to minimize pressure on specific parts of the body.

The type of bed frame you choose can also affect the way the mattress feels. Some frames are made from metal and can be sturdier than other types of bed frame. Other frames are made from wood and may be more elegant in design. The type of material used for the bed’s cover can influence how the mattress feels as well. Some covers are quilted while others are composed of tightly woven cotton or synthetic blend fabric that can affect the breathability of the mattress.

One of the most important considerations when buying a bed is the quality and certifications of its materials. Look for a mattress that meets the appropriate governmental standards. You should also be aware of any chemicals, such as flame retardants, that may be used to treat the mattress. Some of these chemicals, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), can be harmful to your health.

If you suffer from back pain, you should consider a mattress that provides ample pressure relief. The pressure relief feature cushions key points, such as the hips and shoulders, to redistribute your weight and encourage spinal alignment. You can test the mattress for its pressure relief by sitting on the edge of the bed. The mattress should remain stable, without dipping down or sagging, and shouldn’t have any noticeable sinkage.

The Helix Dusk Luxe mattress has a layer of cooling gel in the top of the pillowtop that works with the mattress’s tencel cover to draw heat away from your body. Those with back problems can also add the optional ErgoAlign layer for zoned support in the top layer of foam.

The Helix Dusk Luxe is a hybrid mattress that has six layers of different foams. The first three foam layers provide a soft, luxurious feel while the Helix Sleep System’s individually wrapped pocket coils offer durability. The mattress can be customized with an option to upgrade the base layer to a Helix Cooling GlacioTex cover that uses fibers to draw heat away from the body, as well as a premium layer of graphite ribbons for added cooling.
