Finding the Right Bed For You
Whether you’re a back sleeper, stomach sleeper or a mix of both, a great bed will help you get a great night’s sleep. It’ll also help alleviate back pain, improve your mood, regulate your body temperature and promote a healthy weight.
The key is finding the right mattress for your sleep style. If your current mattress is too soft and you toss and turn frequently, it won’t provide the support your body needs for a good night’s rest. Too firm a mattress, on the other hand, can cause your spine to misalign and lead to back pain.
A medium-firm bed is the best choice for most people because it provides adequate support for most sleep styles. A good mattress will also offer strong motion isolation so you and your partner can sleep peacefully without disturbing each other. And it will have sufficient edge support so you can lie close to the side of the mattress without feeling like the sides are collapsing in on you.
If you have sleep problems such as night sweats, allergies or a chronic medical condition, an adjustable bed can give you the relief you need for a better, more restful slumber. It can also ease back pain, joint and muscle stiffness and even fibromyalgia.
There are a variety of beds to choose from, including traditional innerspring models and memory foam options. There are also hybrid beds with coils and foam. Many of these mattresses come in a range of firmnesses, from medium to extra-firm, so you should be able to find the right one for your sleeping preferences.
You’ll want to look for a mattress that has cooling materials to keep you cool throughout the night. Some mattress brands use cooling covers that have an instant chilling effect, while others have more durable construction that allows the bed to breathe. You’ll also want a mattress with a strong foundation to prevent sagging, indentations and other signs of wear over time.
Many of our top-rated mattresses feature a combination of gel-infused memory foam and support foam to create a balanced feel. This type of construction is especially popular with back and stomach sleepers, who need a balance of comfort and support.
Some of our favorite mattresses also have a layer of microcoils to add bounce and responsiveness. These layers are often placed between the memory foam and the support coils, which helps prevent the mattress from overheating. The Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress we tested uses this technology and also has a three-inch perimeter of high-density foam to provide edge support. This mattress was a good fit for our side and back sleepers, and it held up well to our heavy testing.
