This pattern of activity is observed in the brain as a result of a reduction in the sensitivity of neurons that receive and respond to sensory inputs. It is believed that these changes are mediated by molecules that regulate cerebral vasodilation, neuroinflammation, and neural plasticity.

Sleep is a fundamental biological process, but we still don’t fully understand the role it plays in the mind and body.
