How to Choose Between a Mattress and a Bed

A bed is a basic piece of furniture that is intended to provide a person with the comfort, support, and structure necessary to rest. The bed is often used in combination with another pieces of furniture such as a dresser, nightstand, or dressing table. In some cases the bed will serve as the primary focal point of the bedroom, while in other instances the bed will be incorporated into the decorating scheme but not actually take up a large part of the room. Beds are available in a variety of styles and prices. For many years the double bed was the most common style of bed available, however, in recent years the single bed has become more popular.

Double bed frames have undergone several changes over the years, including: the removal of the pullout bedding in the lowest position (the traditional “bed low” position) and the addition of a high head/low floor bunk platform that provides additional sleeping space. High bed bunk platform beds typically consist of a flat surface with several individual platforms at various heights. The low floor model offers additional storage space under the bed in an area that can be pulled out into a separate “high” area. High bed frames are generally wider than traditional single bed frames, and the mattress itself can have a variety of types of bedding integrated into its design. The most popular types of bedding for this style of bed are memory foam, cotton, or synthetic in nature.

A bed frame with a solid base is known as a “box” frame. Box frames generally have a two piece frame with either a solid wood or metal frame. The most common material to use for a box frame is a hardwood frame, although there are a number of different materials that can be used, including: foam, steel, aluminum, and even textile. The mattresses that are placed on a box frame typically feature: two-way spring suspension, cast aluminum foundation, and a metal head and foot board.

An innerspring bed is comprised of a number of springs embedded in a core of soft material that is wrapped around the inside of a box spring. The innerspring mattresses feature both the benefits of both the hardwood and box spring bed frame styles. In addition to the two-way spring system, these beds may also feature non-woven innerspring construction. Many people prefer this construction because it provides a more comfortable mattress, but it is also easier to replace, which can make it a good choice for those who do not plan on moving quite frequently.

The two-piece and two-way systems have been improved upon over the last century, and now feature: air pockets between the springs, and an outer case made of memory foam that contours to the body to help with comfort. The material is also capable of providing custom pressure points to help the user sleep better. Some people like the innerspring mattresses because of their excellent design and comfort level. These beds use no metal rods, and the mattresses can be firm or soft. They can be easily folded for easy storage and portability, making them a popular choice for those with limited space.

Box spring mattresses can offer the greatest in comfort and support. They are constructed from metal frames that are attached to the base using a few screws. A box spring is designed to hold the mattress to the box spring foundation. Some models even use a system of metal ties to secure the mattress to the base of the bed.
