What Is a Bed?
A bed is a flat surface on which anything rests, usually consisting of a soft cushioned mattress supported by either wood slats or a sprung base. A bed may be a single size for a child or adult, or it may be double or queen-sized or larger for two people to sleep together. Most modern beds include a box spring inner-sprung base, which provides extra support and suspension for the mattress. Beds may also be covered with a sheet of cotton or other fabric, and in some cases with a quilt, a duvet or another covering blanket. These materials are collectively known as bedding. Beds may have a headboard for leaning against, and they may have side rails for sitting up in bed, or a footboard. Beds are available in a range of styles, from infant-sized bassinets and cribs to king and queen-sized designs.
In the past, many mattresses were made from a variety of materials such as straw or feathers, and some still use such materials today. More often, however, a mattress is composed of innerspring coils or polyurethane foam. Its top upholstery layer may also be of cotton batting or fiberfill, while its fill components may be made from latex, viscoelastic or other flexible polyurethane foams. A grid-top foundation style bed base, also called a grid-top foundation or a platform base, is a type of innerspring or inner-sprung mattress foundation that has a metal or wooden slatted grid on which the mattress sits.
The term bed may also be used figuratively to refer to any place where a person or thing is situated, especially when it is considered a comfortable and welcoming environment. In etiquette, it was once considered polite to receive certain visitors, such as ambassadors or great lords, in their bed. This practice was particularly prevalent in royal courts and lasted until the end of the Ancien RĂ©gime in France.
Binge eating disorder (BED) is a mental health condition that involves episodes of uncontrolled and excessive eating. It is not known what causes BED, but it appears to be related to a combination of factors, including genetic vulnerabilities and environmental, social and cultural influences. BED affects both men and women of all ages and is found in people from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
The most common way to hide metal frame legs is to add a bed skirt. This is an easy and inexpensive way to change the appearance of a bed. Some bed skirts are fitted and designed to be hidden beneath the mattress, while others have a more traditional look and hang over the edges of the mattress. If a bed does not have a skirt, a bed leg cover is an alternative way to hide the legs of a metal frame. Some people also choose to use a bed riser or cot sides, which are raised platforms that provide extra height to a bed. These can be useful for people with back problems or other physical conditions that require a higher position in bed to help them get out of bed.
